This hands-on second session of a two-part workshop with Jenny Dale, Information Literacy Coordinator at UNC Greensboro University Libraries, will focus on providing real examples of lateral reading activities that can be used in various library teaching settings. Participants will engage in activities that can be adapted for different audiences, modes of instruction (online and in-person), and classroom environments (from one-shot sessions to credit-bearing courses). Participants will use the examples as inspiration to design a short lateral reading activity that they can integrate into their teaching practice.

Jenny Dale is the Information Literacy Coordinator at UNC Greensboro University Libraries, where she helps members of the campus community navigate the murky waters of our current information landscape. She became mildly obsessed with lateral reading as a strategy for evaluating information found online back in 2018 after reading about the results of a study conducted by Wineburg and McGrew, and she’s been building it into lesson plans about evaluation ever since. She has printed about lateral reading at local, state, and national library conferences, and is happy to talk to anyone about why it’s so great!
