The Understanding Art module provides an overview of art for budding artists and art appreciators alike. Based on the middle school art curriculum, the three main units of study include:

  • What Is Art?: focuses on common forms of art, the places we find art, and how to respond to and talk about art; identifies various forms and types of art such as painting, sculpture, architecture, installation, and performance art.
  • Major Art Movements: including prehistoric art, ancient and classical art, Byzantine and medieval art, Renaissance art, Baroque and Romanticism, Realism and Impressionism, Cubism, Dadaism and Surrealism, Abstract Expressionism, and Pop Art.
  • Art in Culture: identifies how art intersects with social and cultural influences such as identity, ethics, propaganda, philanthropy, censorship, and ownership, as well as how institutions use and promote art.

Hundreds of full-color images of famous pieces of art; videos on art, art history, and painting and drawing techniques; and links to many biographies of famous artists enhance the accessible articles. A timeline, glossaries, and Fun Facts articles round out this unique unit.
